Black grout and crumbling grout: causes, repair and prevention

Blackened grout can be nothing more than grime on the surface, but when the grout is crumbling it signals a loss of strength and calls for repair. If a cement-based mix stays damp for long periods, mould can colonise its pores and uneven areas, while hairline cracks allow water to keep seeping between the tiles.

Why does grout turn black and start crumbling?

Grout fills the joints between ceramic tiles and may include cement, aggregates, pigments, polymers and additives. Cementitious grout is naturally porous, so it can absorb moisture, soap residue and body oils, which creates the ideal environment for various fungi, including species from the Aspergillus genus.

Crumbling can be caused by age, water ingress, movement in the tiling, or poor application. Before you begin any repair, check what you can see and feel along the joints:

  • Loose powder when you run a finger over the grout
  • Cracks that return even after cleaning
  • Hollow, sunken or missing sections between the tiles
  • Black marks accompanied by a damp smell
  • Areas that stay wet for a long time after showering

When is cleaning no longer enough?

Using an appropriate cleaner can lift surface mould when the grout is still solid. However, if the mix sheds particles, has holes, or remains dark even after it has been cleaned and fully dried, simply whitening the surface will not fix the underlying damage. In that case, the deteriorated material needs removing and the joint must be redone.

  • Clean only when the grout is firm and free of cracks
  • Replace sections that have become brittle
  • Look into leaks if dampness comes back quickly
  • Check the silicone in corners and along the shower enclosure edges
  • Seek technical help if tiles are loose or the wall is damp

How to remove damaged grout and get rid of mould

Complete removal is only necessary where the grout is compromised, using a hand grout rake designed for the job. Protect your eyes and hands, work carefully to avoid chipping the tiles, and scrape out the mix until you reach sound, firm material. Try not to create dust, and do not drive the tool so deep that you damage the waterproofing layer behind the tiling.

After scraping, vacuum up the debris and wash the joints with mild washing-up liquid and water, without mixing chemical products. The area must dry out completely before new grout is applied. If there is water ingress, a leak, or moisture coming from behind the tiles, that cause has to be fixed first; otherwise the mould will return even on freshly applied grout.

How to apply new grout and protect the joints

Mix and apply a grout that suits the joint width and is intended for wet areas, following the proportions and curing time stated on the packaging. Once it has fully cured, a penetrating sealer made for cement-based grout can help reduce water absorption and staining, but it does not replace the shower enclosure’s structural waterproofing.

  • Remove all dust before applying the mix
  • Pack the joints fully so there are no voids
  • Wipe away excess with a sponge that is only slightly damp
  • Follow the stated waiting time before getting the tiling wet
  • Apply sealer only to grout that has cured and dried
  • Renew the protection as directed by the manufacturer

How to stop joints turning black again

Controlling moisture matters more than repeating harsh cleaning routines. After showering, use a squeegee on the shower walls and floor, leave the door open, and use a window or extractor fan to speed up drying. The same approach also underpins day-to-day care that helps prevent bathroom grout from darkening.

Regularly inspect corners, drains, taps and pipe penetrations, as even small leaks can keep joints damp from within. When grout is sound, sealed and able to dry between showers, fungi have far less moisture to feed on, so black staining takes longer to reappear.
