How to Remove Limescale from Bottles and Thermal Flasks with Food-Grade Citric Acid

Food-grade citric acid is a straightforward way to tackle limescale that builds up inside bottles and thermal flasks. Unlike mixing baking soda with vinegar, it stays acidic, breaks down mineral deposits, and avoids the strong lingering smell many people associate with vinegar.

Why do baking soda and vinegar lose strength when mixed?

Vinegar is acidic, while baking soda is alkaline. When they meet, they react: you get bubbling and carbon dioxide is released, but part of the acidity needed to dissolve the calcium carbonate in limescale is neutralised.

That fizz can help shift loose debris, but it does not automatically mean a deeper clean. If the aim is to dissolve a mineral crust, a single acidic product is usually more effective than combining ingredients that weaken each other’s action.

Which product works best against mineral deposits?

Citric acid gradually dissolves the chalky white layer formed by minerals in water. Because it is sold as a powder, you can mix only what you need, and it does not leave the persistent aroma that some people notice after using distilled white vinegar.

Distilled vinegar used on its own can also remove limescale. The advantage of citric acid is the subtler smell and how easy it is to adjust the strength of the cleaning solution.

How to use citric acid in bottles and thermal flasks?

Before you start, check the manufacturer’s guidance to confirm that acidic solutions are suitable for the inner lining. If the material is compatible, you can do the following:

  • dissolve 1–2 tablespoons of citric acid in hot water;
  • pour the solution into the bottle or thermal flask;
  • leave it to work for 20 to 30 minutes;
  • use a soft brush if any residue is still stuck on;
  • rinse several times under running water before using again.

What precautions prevent damage and residue in the container?

Do not leave the solution sitting in the bottle for hours, and never mix it with bleach, strong detergents, or other chemical products. Lids with valves, rubber seals, and removable components should be taken apart and cleaned according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • do not use steel wool or anything that can scratch the inside;
  • avoid boiling water if the manual advises against it;
  • do not use this method on aluminium or delicate linings without confirming compatibility;
  • rinse until any taste or odour has completely disappeared;
  • let every part dry fully before closing the container.

Regular cleaning helps stop limescale coming back

Limescale returns when water high in calcium and magnesium is left in the container and then evaporates. Emptying the bottle after use, washing the inside, and leaving it open until dry helps reduce crust formation and prevents a damp smell.

When deposits are already visible, food-grade citric acid provides a more direct approach than the baking soda and vinegar combination. Used in moderation and followed by thorough rinsing, it keeps bottles and thermal flasks clean without relying on abrasive tools that can damage the internal finish.
