Tearing up a floor with a hammer and chisel is often completely unnecessary.
Anyone who has walked across tiles that sound hollow will recognise the uneasy feeling: is something merely shifting underneath, or is the floor about to give way? Many homeowners immediately picture dust, noise and the cost of a full re-lay. In reality, there’s a surprisingly straightforward technique that can often rescue hollow tiles for the long term-without lifting a single tile.
When tiles sound hollow: how to read the warning signs correctly
A hollow sound usually occurs when a tile has partly come away from the screed layer. A void forms between the tile and the substrate, which amplifies footfall noise. The surface may still look perfectly fine, but the bond beneath has been compromised.

Even so, it’s worth listening carefully and checking the floor in a methodical way. The larger the hollow area, the greater the chance the ceramic will crack at some point.
How to check whether the damage is still acceptable
A quick test will tell you how serious it is. All you need is a rubber mallet or the handle of a screwdriver.
- Identify the suspect tile (where does it sound hollow?).
- Gently tap the tile and the surrounding area.
- Listen for differences in sound: solid, dull, or clearly hollow.
In many cases, only part of the tile has debonded-around 10 to 30% of the area. Tiles like this can often remain in place for years without breaking; they’re mainly noticeable because of the noise.
It becomes more of a concern when more than about half the tile sounds hollow. At that point the tile is, in effect, held only by grout and remnants of adhesive. A dropped pan, a sudden point load or everyday wear can then be enough to cause cracking-or for the tile to shatter outright.
Critical zones: where tiles must not move
The location matters just as much as the size of the hollow area. Not every hollow tile carries the same risk.
Particularly sensitive areas include:
- Hallway and entrance area
- In front of the sink and hob in the kitchen
- Around the shower or bath
- Thresholds and transitions into other rooms
These spots are exposed to repeated high loads: hard heels, wet shoes, heavy shopping, children playing. A tile without solid support underneath is put under constant stress there-and will usually fail sooner.
If the hollow area is under a cupboard, in a corner, or behind a door, the tile may remain unnoticed for a long time. In that case, repair is mainly worthwhile if the sound bothers you or if small cracks are already visible.
Resin injection instead of a building site: the smart alternative to chiselling tiles out
Traditionally, the standard fix was to carefully chisel out the tile, remove old adhesive, re-bed it, and renew the grout. That approach is messy, noisy and time-consuming-and the tile often breaks during removal.
This is exactly where a modern method comes in, now increasingly common with professionals and DIYers alike: injecting a low-viscosity resin or epoxy compound beneath the loosened tile.

Why the resin method avoids so much hassle
The biggest benefit is that the visible surface is left untouched. Nothing is broken out, there’s no large-scale masking up, and no cloud of dust drifting through the living room.
Resin injection offers several advantages:
- No removal: the tile stays in place and the look is preserved.
- Minimal mess: only a few tiny drill holes in the grout, with no tile rubble.
- Lower risk: the tile itself isn’t stressed, so there’s little chance of damage.
- Quick return to use: once cured, the floor can take full load again.
- Cost saving: there’s no need to rebuild the entire floor structure.
If you no longer have spare tiles in the garage or cellar, this approach is often the only way to keep the floor looking consistent.
How it works in practice
Most commonly, a very thin epoxy resin or a dedicated repair adhesive is used. The consistency is closer to oil than to standard tile adhesive, which allows the material to flow easily into voids beneath the tile.
As it cures, the resin bonds the back of the tile firmly to the substrate again and fills any air pockets. The area effectively becomes a continuous, solid section. The result is no springiness, no hollow sound-and a much lower risk of breakage.
Step by step: how resin injection is carried out
If you have some basic DIY experience, you can try this method yourself. Many specialist contractors also offer it.
1. Drill small access holes in the grout
First you need a route into the void. Rather than drilling into the tile itself, professionals use the grout lines. That protects the surface and makes the repair almost invisible later.
- Pinpoint the suspect tile precisely and tap-test it.
- Using a 2–3 mm masonry bit, drill directly into the grout around the affected tile-usually two to four holes.
- Drill only deep enough to reach the void; do not drill down into the screed.
- Vacuum out drilling dust thoroughly so the resin can spread properly.
The holes are tiny and can be closed again with fresh grout. Visually, very little evidence of the work remains.
2. Inject the resin slowly and fill the void
Next, the liquid resin is pressed into the prepared holes using a fine nozzle, cartridge or syringe.
Working slowly and with control is crucial: the resin needs time to run beneath the tile. The void is typically full once material starts to appear at another drill hole or you feel clear back-pressure.
For larger areas, it helps to use several holes in sequence to achieve even distribution. Any overflow should be wiped off immediately using a suitable solvent. Once epoxy cures, it is extremely difficult to remove.
Apply pressure, allow to cure - done
To keep the tile perfectly in position while the resin cures, it needs weight on top. Many tradespeople use water bottles, toolboxes or a stack of books on the affected area.

After curing, the small holes in the grout can be filled with fresh grout. With the right colour match, the repair is practically invisible. If you tap-test again with a rubber mallet, you’ll usually hear the difference immediately: solid, firm, no hollow sound.
When the method is ideal - and when it isn’t
Resin injection is particularly well suited when:
- Individual tiles or small clusters sound hollow, while the rest of the floor is sound.
- The room has expensive tiles or ones that are difficult to source.
- The area needs to be usable again quickly, without major disruption.
- The appearance and grout pattern of the existing floor should be preserved.
The method has limits where tiles are already clearly cracked, badly sunken, or extensively debonded. If entire sections of a room are affected, a more comprehensive refurbishment is often unavoidable.
What the product terms mean - and what DIYers should watch for
Many products are labelled “epoxy resin”, “injection resin” or “repair adhesive”. What they have in common is that two components are mixed and then cure through a chemical reaction. Once hardened, these materials are very tough; while liquid, they are thin and free-flowing.
If you plan to do the work yourself, allow for safety glasses, gloves and good ventilation. The material bonds strongly and can irritate skin and eyes. Indoors, it’s best to work carefully and follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely, particularly for pot life and curing time.
There’s also a sustainability angle: every square metre of tiled floor that doesn’t need to be ripped up and disposed of saves resources, energy and waste. And often a small, targeted repair is enough to give an ageing floor many more years of service-without a breaker, dust clouds and renovation stress.
