Boil-in-the-bag rice can seem like the neat, convenient option, with portions already measured out. A Polish chemist is urging people to think twice, however: when rice is cooked inside a plastic pouch, she warns that unseen plastic particles and chemicals can migrate into the food. In her view, skipping boil-in-the-bag rice is a small change that can make a meaningful difference to health.
Why boil-in-the-bag rice is problematic
In many supermarkets it is placed right at the front of the shelf: portioned rice in cooking bags. No weighing, no colander, and no pan boiling over - convenience is the main selling point. According to the chemist, though, what you are mostly paying for is the packaging.
"Anyone who buys rice in a bag isn’t paying for better quality, but for plastic that ends up in the pan during cooking."

If you want to get started, small, manageable changes can help. Three measures can have an immediate impact:
- Buy rice, millet and similar products in larger packs (for example, 1 kg bags) rather than in cooking bags.
- Avoid reheating hot food in thin plastic tubs or single-use containers.
- When replacing appliances, choose models that use glass or stainless steel where possible - for example, kettles or vacuum flasks.
These tweaks usually cost very little convenience. Many people find that the effort stays almost the same, while the nagging feeling when looking at the bin - and at their own consumption - drops noticeably.
