It has passed testing
According to BAIC’s research division, the company has completed development of a sodium-ion battery prototype whose technical specifications are said to match the industry’s leading level. The battery is based on a prismatic cell and, in internal tests, is reported to achieve an energy density of 170 Wh/kg.
BAIC states that the system supports 4C fast charging, with a full charge taking 11 minutes. The company also reports that the battery can operate across temperatures from -40°C to 60°C. At -20°C, battery capacity is said to remain above 92%, which is presented as improved performance for cold-climate conditions.
Test results relating to safety were released following an internal review. BAIC claims the battery can withstand overcharging up to 200% state of charge without catching fire or exploding, and that it remains stable when exposed to 200°C during thermal-resistance testing.
BAIC added that it has the necessary capabilities in electrolyte development, cell design and system integration, and that it is working to address issues linked to energy density and cycle-life performance.
