Painting tree trunks white is a practice known as limewashing, traditionally done by mixing hydrated lime with water. The pale coating reflects part of the sun’s radiation and helps prevent the bark from overheating - a safeguard that is particularly helpful for young and fruit trees whose trunks are still slender and highly exposed to direct sunlight.
Why does the white colour help protect the trunk?
Dark bark takes in more solar energy and can become very hot during spells of strong sunshine. A white surface bounces back a larger share of the light, which reduces sudden temperature swings in the tissues just beneath the bark.
This kind of protection is used mainly to prevent sunscald - damage that can lead to dried patches, cracking and the death of tissue. Once the bark splits, fungi, bacteria and insects have easier entry points into the tree.
How is limewashing applied to trees?
Hydrated lime should be mixed into a suitable solution for use on the trunk, avoiding an overly thick build-up. Application is usually focused on the side that receives the most sun:
- Gently remove dirt and any loose pieces of bark;
- Use only a suitable product, properly diluted;
- Brush on a thin coat;
- Start near the base of the trunk;
- Continue up to about 80 centimetres to 1 metre in height;
- Choose a dry, mild day with no immediate rain forecast.
Is it OK to use wall paint instead of lime?
Using any household paint as a substitute is not advised. Waterproofing products, oil-based paints and exterior coatings can create an unsuitable film over the bark and interfere with the gas exchange carried out by the trunk’s natural structures.
Traditional limewashing uses a thin mineral solution, whereas commercial products designed to protect trunks have their own formulations. Before applying any coating to a young fruit tree, it is important to check that it is intended for plants and to follow the recommended concentration.
Does the white layer also deter insects and moss?
Because lime creates an alkaline surface, it may temporarily make conditions less favourable for some organisms on the bark, but this should not be treated as its main purpose. The most reliable benefit of a white coating is its ability to reflect light and reduce overheating:
- It can lessen the amount of radiation hitting the bark directly;
- It helps reduce extreme temperature fluctuations;
- It protects young trees with thin bark most of all;
- It may temporarily hinder some surface organisms;
- It does not replace proper pest and disease control;
- It needs reapplying when rain and weather wear the coating away.
Why does the practice make more sense for young trees?
Newly planted fruit trees tend to have relatively thin bark and a small canopy, leaving much of the trunk in full sun. In those circumstances, a white protective layer can reduce heat-related damage while the tree develops a broader canopy and tougher outer tissues. For mature, well-shaded trees, the need is usually lower.
In parks and on streets, white trunks can also appear simply as an aesthetic tradition, even though not every tree requires the treatment. If you grow species similar to those used in very sunny sites, the choice should be based on the tree’s age, species, sun exposure and bark condition - rather than automatically limewashing every trunk.
