In the bathroom, smell often sets the rule: if a towel still seems fine, it stays on the rail. A Japanese research team has now measured in detail what is really going on inside these apparently “fresh” fabrics - and they point to a clear limit: after roughly two months of continuous use, a resilient bacterial nest develops that ordinary washing can barely shift.
Everyday life in the bathroom: why towels are perfect germ homes
A towel can look clean because we use it after showering - in other words, on freshly washed skin. That’s precisely why many people don’t suspect anything. In reality, every time you dry off you work a mix of skin bacteria, dead skin cells, body oils, soap residue and moisture deep into the fibres.
The bathroom itself provides near-ideal conditions: warmth, humidity and limited airflow. If the towel is then scrunched over a radiator or tossed onto a hook, the damp is trapped like a tiny greenhouse. Microorganisms don’t need long to “decide” what to do - they simply get to work.

Japanese study: 26 households, six months, thousands of germ samples
Kato’s team followed towels in 26 Japanese households for half a year. Residents used them as they normally would, while the scientists took samples at set intervals and measured bacterial counts on the towel surface.
The data show a clear pattern: levels started relatively low, then climbed week by week. What mattered was not only the quantity, but also how the microbes were arranged on the fabric.
Around the eighth week, the situation shifted: scattered microorganisms turned into stable bacterial communities known as biofilms. These effectively glue themselves to the fibres, exchange substances with one another and build a protective layer made up of slime and protein fragments. In this communal form, they survive wash cycles far more successfully.
Biofilm - when bacteria become stronger as a team
A biofilm is like a multi-storey microbe city. The outer layers shield the inner ones from heat, detergent and mechanical stress. Researchers are familiar with these structures from dental plaque, shower drains or contact-lens cases - and the results now suggest towels can join that list when they are used for long enough.
According to the study’s analysis, towels reach a critical threshold after about two months: the bacteria are then present in this networked form and a standard 40-degree wash only partially affects them.
164,000 bacteria per square centimetre - what that actually means
The measured upper level is striking: up to 164,000 bacteria per square centimetre of fabric after two months of use. For comparison, our skin naturally carries many microorganisms, but most belong to the normal skin flora and remain in balance. On a towel, by contrast, different sources of germs are mixed together.
Especially unpleasant: other studies have repeatedly found faecal contamination on towels, including variants of Escherichia coli. These typically come from hands that weren’t washed thoroughly enough after using the toilet, and then end up in the fabric during drying. In some spot checks, as many as nine out of ten towels were affected.
Bacterial numbers can surge after only a handful of uses. An environmental microbiologist reported in their own tests that after just three uses without washing, colonies grew significantly faster - particularly in areas that regularly come into contact with the face and hands.
"The areas you use to dry your face are often among the most heavily contaminated surfaces on the entire towel."
Why ordinary laundry stops being enough once you miss the window
Once a thick biofilm has formed, many household wash programmes hit their limits. A gentle cycle at 30 or 40 degrees may remove visible dirt and reduce odour, but it can leave part of the organised bacterial layer behind. Those surviving germs then rapidly repopulate the towel as soon as it is used again.
The Japanese researchers observed that after about 60 days of continuous use, biofilms became increasingly difficult to reduce even with regular washing. At that stage, replacing the towel is often the only realistic option if you care about a cleaner bathroom microbiome.
How often you should actually wash towels
From a microbiology standpoint, the sensible limit is well below what many people do day to day. Specialists advise using a towel for no more than two to three days in a row before it goes into the wash.
For the lowest possible germ load, these basic rules apply:
- Change bath and shower towels every two to three days
- Ideally wash at 60 degrees or higher
- Use a biological or heavy-duty detergent that includes bleaching agents, not only a delicates detergent
- Let towels dry out completely after washing
- Hang fabric spread out, rather than rolled up or bunched over a hook
If you sweat heavily, have small children at home, or are prone to skin issues, even more frequent washing is the safer approach. Guest towels should go straight into the laundry basket after a visit - even if they look as though they were hardly used.
Proper storage: small habits that slow the germ surge
Between washes, drying is crucial. If the towel is hung fully spread out - for example on a wide towel rail - the remaining moisture drops much faster. That removes part of the basis bacteria need to multiply.
If the fabric stays damp for hours, germs can reproduce with very little resistance. This is especially true in poorly ventilated bathrooms with several showers a day, where moisture and warm air build up. In that case, it helps to open the window more often or use an extraction fan or other ventilation solution.

Using the same bath towel within a family increases bacterial diversity even further. That also raises the risk of passing on pathogens or diarrhoea-causing germs, even if nobody seems actively unwell. Separate towels for each family member noticeably reduces that risk.
How dangerous are towel germs, really?
For healthy people with a robust immune system, a heavily colonised towel does not automatically mean illness. Our immune defences encounter countless microorganisms every day and usually cope without trouble. It becomes more critical when several factors come together.
Extra caution is worthwhile, for example, in these situations:
- Households with babies, older people or anyone with a weakened immune system
- Existing skin conditions such as eczema, acne or broken skin
- Recurring infections affecting the throat or the gastrointestinal tract
- Shared accommodation or house shares with a small, heavily used bathroom
In these settings, a contaminated towel can act like an amplifier, keeping pathogens in the environment for longer. Consistent washing and clear rules about who uses which towel reduce the risks substantially.
Practical tips: when to throw away, when to simply wash hotter
Many people get attached to their soft favourite towels and want them to last. The fabric itself can often endure for years, but from a hygiene perspective that isn’t always sensible. As a rule: if a towel still smells musty after washing, or grey shadows remain in the weave, a stable biofilm has often established itself within the fibres.
As a first step, try an intensive wash: 60 or 90 degrees, heavy-duty detergent, don’t overfill the washing machine drum, then dry fully in a tumble dryer or on an airer. If the smell persists or the fabric still feels “stale”, it’s time to replace it.
If you buy new towels, start with good habits straight away: wash once before the first use, then keep usage periods short from the beginning and allow thorough drying. That way you don’t create the conditions in which a billion-strong bacterial city can settle into your favourite towel.
