Less electricity, less water, one button press: the washing machine’s Eco programme looks like the ideal answer for everyday life and for the environment. When you’re washing bed linen, reaching for that setting can become almost automatic. Yet that very habit can gradually clog the machine, encourage bacteria and spoil delicate fabrics such as linen.
The popular money-saver – good for bills, bad for hygiene
Economy cycles use less water, lower temperatures and a much longer run time. Typical settings are 40–50 °C, and often lower still. That reduces energy use, but it creates another issue: microorganisms can survive these conditions surprisingly well.
Appliance-service professionals say they have seen more and more machines arriving in recent years with the same set of problems: stubborn odours, slimy deposits, grey marks on light-coloured laundry - often in machines that are run mostly on gentle or Eco settings.

Laboratory tests show that within just a few months, millions of germs can build up on the rubber seal around the door. You usually notice the result the moment you open it: a smell somewhere between rotten eggs, wet soil and a stagnant lake.

The 70% rule for loading the drum
Many manufacturers advise against filling the drum to its absolute limit. A practical rule of thumb is to load it to a maximum of about 70–80%. A handy check: once the laundry is in, you should still be able to fit your hand flat between the washing and the top of the drum.
Before you load up, it’s worth taking a brief moment to:
- Fully unfold each duvet cover and sheet.
- Avoid stuffing large items inside each other (for example, pillowcases inside a duvet cover).
- Keep large terry towels out of a linen load so you don’t end up with one heavy “knot”.
Wash hot regularly – not just for cleaning cloths

Vinegar helps loosen limescale and soap residue that can act as a feeding ground for germs. At the same time, the hot empty cycle attacks the biofilm layer, breaks it up and flushes it out through the drain.
Small post-wash rituals with a big impact
Most issues don’t begin during the wash itself, but in the many hours in between. In a sealed, damp machine, germs thrive.
A few seconds after every cycle can make a noticeable difference:
- Leave the door open, or at least ajar.
- Pull the detergent drawer out slightly so it can dry.
- If water collects there, wipe the rubber seal quickly with a cloth.

- Clean the washing machine thoroughly first (90 °C empty cycle, vinegar, and clean the seal).
- Wash linen bedding on its own, or in a small load, at 60 °C.
- Use a biological powder detergent with bleaching agents for light-coloured laundry.
- Afterwards, air-dry the bedding completely; don’t fold or store it while even slightly damp.
Even so, some deeply set discolouration may never come out completely. That’s why preventative care is far more rewarding than any later rescue effort.

Modern washing machines can feel as if they come with a dozen cycles: Eco, Quick, Hygiene, Easy-care, Cotton, Intensive, Mix. In day-to-day life, many people keep hitting the same button out of convenience. A simple baseline strategy is more effective:

- 60 °C programme: schedule regularly for bedding and towels.
- 90 °C empty cycle: a monthly cleaning ritual for the machine itself.
- Quick programme: only for emergencies, as cleaning performance is often weaker.
Choosing programmes deliberately helps you avoid grey sheets, a musty drum and costly call-outs. More importantly, premium textiles such as linen bedding keep their look for much longer - which is the whole point of buying them in the first place.
