Many homeowners put up with joints between paving stones, slabs and patio flags turning green for months. Then spring arrives and you end up on your knees for hours, scraping out moss, blasting everything with a pressure washer - only for the same problem to return a few weeks later. Professionals take a different approach: they use the winter months and rely on something found in almost every kitchen.

Why moss and weeds are vulnerable in winter

In December, the garden looks as though it has shut down. Borders are bare and shrubs carry very few leaves. Between the slabs, though, it’s a different story. In narrow joints, roots, spores and seeds can shelter surprisingly well from cold weather and frost. As soon as the first milder days arrive, they spring into action and turn joints into slippery, miniature “beds”.

That is exactly why tackling the issue in mid-winter pays off. In January or February, plants are under strain and their metabolism is slower. Any disruption hits harder than it would during peak growth. Acting at this time breaks the cycle before moss and weeds properly get going.

Many people reach for hot water or vinegar. Both come with drawbacks: boiling water can encourage micro-cracks in frozen or heavily saturated slabs, while vinegar often leaves roots and seeds alive. A simple mineral salt from the household cupboard tends to work more reliably.

The underrated kitchen powder against moss

What’s meant here is ordinary bicarbonate of soda, often sold as “baking soda”. It’s a mineral salt that doesn’t poison plants like a typical chemical weedkiller; instead, it dehydrates them.

The powder creates an imbalance on the plant surface and around the roots: water is drawn out of the cells, so the plant effectively dries out from the inside. At the same time, the pH level in the jointing material rises slightly. Many mosses and common joint weeds dislike that - they germinate less readily, or fail to establish at all.

Winter adds a further advantage: there’s usually plenty of moisture, whether as dew, fog or fine drizzle. The mineral dissolves gradually and can seep deep into the cracks - without exhausting scrubbing.

How the dry winter treatment works

Professionals often start with a straightforward, dry application. It’s ideal when the patio is only lightly greened over, or when you want to prevent growth before it takes hold.

Step-by-step: drying out moss and weeds

  • Remove loose debris: Sweep away leaves and dirt with a stiff broom; the joints do not need to be spotless.
  • Measure the bicarbonate of soda: Allow roughly a small handful per linear metre of joint - about 20 grams.
  • Scatter the powder: Sprinkle it loosely over the joints, taking care not to drop it onto borders or lawns.
  • Work it in with a brush: Use a scrubbing brush or a hard broom to push the powder down into the joints so it contacts the soil and roots.
  • Don’t rinse afterwards: Avoid adding water. Natural winter dampness will dissolve it and carry it down into the joint.

Over the following days, the salt dissolves bit by bit. It works its way downwards, reaches leftover root material and knocks it back while it’s already weakened. In the best case, the joints are almost empty by spring - and you only need to sweep out loose remnants.

Liquid treatment for heavily greened surfaces

If the patio is already thick with moss, dry sprinkling alone often isn’t enough. In that situation, a water-based mix adds extra impact, especially when you’re dealing with visible moss cushions and dense tufts of grass in the joints.

Mix for a more natural “liquid treatment”

For a bucket or large watering can, the following blend works well:

  • approx. 950 millilitres of water (hand-warm, not boiling)
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda, stirred in thoroughly until no crystals are visible

Pour the mixture into a watering can with a rose attachment or a pump sprayer. Choose a dry day with no rain forecast and as little wind as possible. That way, the solution lands where it should: directly onto the moss and into the joints.

When watered or sprayed accurately, the green growth often turns yellowish within the next one to two days, then brown. The plants break up more easily, and a firm sweep is usually enough to dislodge them. Persistent patches can be treated again with a second, targeted application.

Keeping the soil healthy and the garden undamaged

As useful as this mineral salt is, excessive amounts can stress the soil - especially if large areas are treated regularly with a watering can. A few basic rules help you avoid harm in the garden.

Common mistakes that reduce effectiveness

In practice, the same slip-ups crop up again and again, and they can make results far weaker than they should be. Three typical examples:

  • Applying a layer that’s too thick: Piling it up in centimetre-deep heaps wastes product and is more likely to burden the soil, without delivering noticeably better outcomes.
  • Rinsing straight away: Flooding the area immediately can wash the salt out of the joint before it has time to work.
  • Treating just before heavy rain: If a downpour is due soon after application, the solution spreads unpredictably and becomes heavily diluted.

A calmer, relatively dry winter day - plus a bit of patience - is the better choice. The effect develops over hours and days, not in minutes.

How to combine the method with other tricks

Bicarbonate of soda isn’t a replacement for good joint maintenance, but it can make it much easier. If you add some mechanical upkeep in spring or summer, surfaces tend to stay clear for longer. A few practical options:

  • Top up joints with sand once a year, ideally using weed-inhibiting jointing material.
  • When laying new paths, design them with joints as narrow as possible from the outset.
  • Manage drainage so that no permanently damp zones form.

Handled this way, many areas need treatment only rarely. In shady spots in particular - where moss naturally thrives - the mix of decent drainage, occasional sweeping and a targeted winter treatment can be especially effective.

Risks, limits and sensible alternatives

If you have pets, bear in mind that larger amounts of freshly applied powder can cause stomach upset if dogs or cats lick it. Once it has been brushed into the joints and has absorbed moisture for a few hours, that risk drops significantly, but it’s still worth keeping a watchful eye.

With very old natural stone slabs or delicate finishes, it’s wise to test a small, inconspicuous area first. In rare cases, residues can leave slight discolouration around the joints, particularly where other salts or fertilisers have already built up.

If you’d rather avoid kitchen-based remedies altogether, you can stick to the traditional route with a joint scraper, wire brush or joint brush. Chemical-free hot-water machines are also used, although they are noisier and consume a lot of energy.

What makes the winter bicarbonate-of-soda approach appealing is its simple shift in timing: you move the hard work out of the busy spring weeks into the quieter, colder season - and let an unremarkable white granule do much of the work while it sits in the joints.
