How to Fix Low Shower Pressure by Cleaning the Shower Head Holes

A drop in shower pressure does not always mean the unit has failed. In many cases, the issue is simply that the tiny holes in the shower head’s spray plate are blocked by limescale, sand and sediment, which reduces the water flow rate.

Why does a shower lose pressure over time?

With everyday use, minerals carried in the water gradually build up in the small openings where the spray comes through. As these points become clogged, the flow turns uneven, the shower feels weak, and the pressure seems lower.

Before you buy a new unit, it is worth cleaning the spray plate safely, because the blockage is often right at the water outlet. The job is straightforward, but it does require switching off the circuit breaker to avoid electric shocks and other risks while handling the shower.

The most common signs tend to look like this:

  • Jets: they come out skewed, weak, or stop completely at some holes.
  • Limescale: pale crusts form around the water outlets.
  • Brush: soft bristles lift grime without widening the holes.
  • Circuit breaker: must be switched off before any cleaning.
  • Technician: needed when the fault is coming from the pipework.

The shower head is the end point of the water supply, and it uses many small holes to spread the flow so a wider area is wetted evenly. When those channels close up, the water loses proper distribution.

That is why “low pressure” can simply be water trying to get through fewer outlets. Rather than forcing dirt further inside with sharp objects, the best approach is to dissolve the deposits and protect the holes in the shower head’s spray plate.

How to clean the shower head spray plate safely

Start by switching off the bathroom circuit breaker and making sure the shower is cold before touching any parts. Remove the spray plate (if your model allows it) and mix white vinegar with warm water.

  • rinse, refit, and test the flow rate.

Why shouldn’t you poke the holes with a needle?

Poking the holes with a needle might feel like the quickest fix, but it can widen the outlets, distort the spray pattern, and push debris deeper into the part. The end result can be worse distribution and reduced shower durability.

It is also best to avoid knives, wire, hard toothpicks and corrosive products, because they can damage plastic, rubber, or metal. Proper cleaning relies on soak time, a soft brush and patience, not force.

Avoid these mistakes during maintenance:

  • puncturing the nozzles with a needle or wire;
  • using harsh products without the manufacturer’s guidance;
  • cleaning the shower while it is still connected to the power supply;
  • forcing old or dried-out parts during disassembly;
  • switching the circuit breaker back on before everything is correctly seated.

When does low pressure point to a bigger problem?

If you have followed tips to clear shower holes and improve pressure, pay attention to whether the fault remains after cleaning. If every tap and shower in the home has low flow rate, the problem may be in the pipework.

A low water tank, a stopcock that is not fully open, old pipes, or internal blockages need technical assessment-especially when the drop is sudden. In those situations, replacing the shower may not fix anything, and the best option is to call a professional for a proper diagnosis.
