Car Windows Fogging in Winter: Simple Anti-Fog Tricks

With a couple of straightforward tweaks, it becomes a lot less stressful.

Cold car, damp air, the clock is ticking - and your view through the windscreen turns milky. Many drivers then set off with only half-cleared visibility or sit there for ages waiting for the blower to finally do its job. Yet there are surprisingly simple ways to keep the inside of the glass clearer for longer and get that annoying moisture under control.

Why car windows keep fogging up in winter

Misting happens when warm, moisture-laden air inside the cabin meets a cold window. The moisture condenses on the glass, forming tiny droplets - and your visibility disappears.

  • Moisture from wet shoes, coats and breath
  • Temperature difference between the cabin and the outside of the glass
  • A film of grime on the inside of the window that gives water something to cling to

Plenty of people rely on pricey anti-fog sprays. They can work, but they’re not always essential. A few household tricks often get you further - and save money.

Shaving foam on the window: it sounds mad, but it works

The most unexpected option is shaving foam as an anti-fog barrier on the inside of the windscreen. The logic is straightforward: a very thin film forms on the glass, making it harder for moisture to stick.

How to use the shaving-foam trick properly

  • Put a small amount of shaving foam onto a clean, soft cloth.
  • Spread it thinly and evenly over the inside of the windscreen.
  • Leave it for a short time.
  • Buff with a dry microfibre cloth until there are no visible marks left.

Important: the layer really does need to be wafer-thin. If you later notice smears, you either used too much product or didn’t buff it enough.

The benefit is that the windscreen stays clearer for longer - often for several days, or even weeks - depending on how often you drive and how damp the cabin is.

A sock with filling: improvised mini dehumidifiers

Tie the sock off securely and leave it in the car - for example in the passenger footwell or under a seat. Cat litter and rice absorb some of the moisture from the air, with no electricity required.

After a few weeks, many drivers notice the sock has become heavier. That’s the point to replace it or top it up.

Bicarbonate of soda as a quiet moisture killer

If you don’t have a pet but still want something to reduce humidity, use standard bicarbonate of soda (the base of baking powder, without additives). A small bowl placed in the car will gradually bind water from the air.

Home remedies for cleaner, less fog-prone glass

A lot of drivers swear by a blend of warm water and colourless household vinegar. This ratio is widely used:

Apply the mixture with a spray bottle or a lightly damp cloth, then wipe dry with a microfibre cloth. The light residue left on the glass can slow down new misting a little.

Washing-up liquid trick: a thin film, a big effect

Another classic is ordinary washing-up liquid. A tiny drop on a damp cloth is enough. Rub it over the glass, then buff thoroughly without rinsing.

Air conditioning in winter: not a luxury, a safety feature

Many people switch the air conditioning off as soon as it gets cold outside - either to save fuel or out of habit. In reality, the compressor is one of the best tools against damp air. The system dries the air before it reaches the windscreen.

  • Turn the air conditioning on, even in sub-zero temperatures
  • Aim the airflow at the windscreen
  • At the start, don’t be afraid to set the fan to a higher speed

On modern cars, the extra fuel use is usually modest - and the safety benefit of clear visibility is far greater.

Keep an eye on the cabin filter

An old, clogged pollen/cabin filter can reduce airflow through the system, leaving moisture trapped in the car for longer. So if you’re still battling misting despite the right settings, it’s worth having the filter checked.

Many manufacturers suggest changing it roughly every 15,000 to 30,000 kilometres or once a year. If you do a lot of city driving, a shorter interval is often the better choice.

Air the car after every trip: small effort, big payoff

Day to day, a huge amount of moisture builds up inside a vehicle - from wet clothing, melting snow on floor mats and the breath of everyone on board. If you shut the doors immediately after arriving, that damp air stays trapped.

Much better:

  • After any longer journey, briefly open all doors or windows
  • Air the car through for 1–2 minutes, if your surroundings allow
  • Remove and dry wet floor mats regularly

That lowers the baseline humidity in the car significantly - and reduces the chance of heavy misting the next morning.

What you’re better off avoiding

Not every online “hack” is suitable for modern vehicles. A few things are best left alone:

  • Hot water on the outside of the windscreen - risk of cracking from thermal shock
  • Glass cleaners with aggressive solvents inside the cabin - they can attack plastics and coatings
  • Rough sponges or scouring pads - they create micro-scratches where dirt and water can lodge

Tissues and kitchen roll often leave fine lint behind, which can interfere with your view or the wipers. Microfibre cloths are a much better option.

How often should you use anti-fog tricks?

Many measures don’t just work once - they last for a while. As a rough guide:

  • Shaving-foam film: refresh every two to four weeks, depending on use
  • Vinegar or washing-up liquid treatment: every one to two weeks, or after a thorough interior clean
  • Sock with cat litter or rice: replace every four to eight weeks
  • Bowl of bicarbonate of soda: change as soon as clumps form or the powder feels damp

If you notice the car mists up heavily after driving in rain or after ski trips, it’s often sensible to put two moisture absorbers in the vehicle during that period.

More safety on winter roads

In winter, good visibility isn’t just about comfort - it’s hard safety. Even slight misting can slow your reactions. In twilight or on icy roads, that can be decisive.

A practical example: if you’re taking children to school in the morning, warm breath and thick winter coats quickly create a damp cabin. That’s when prevention pays off - shaving-foam film, dry mats, air conditioning running. It helps keep the windscreen reliably clear even if the family is chatting and you can see people’s breath.

Many of these steps can be combined. A clean interior, a fresh filter, an improvised dehumidifier and a thin protective film on the glass all support each other. If you test a combination for a week, you’ll quickly see what suits your car and your driving routine.
