Toilet paper seems like an unremarkable purchase-until shelves suddenly sit empty or headlines highlight climate damage. Charmin, in particular, is one of the best-known brands in North America, yet it repeatedly attracts criticism. If you want to understand what you’re buying day in, day out, it’s worth looking at where the rolls are made, which raw materials are used, and how large the environmental footprint really is.

How Charmin gets from the mill to your bathroom

Charmin is owned by the US multinational Procter & Gamble (P&G), one of the world’s biggest producers of hygiene and household paper. The brand is positioned squarely as a premium option: notably soft, tear-resistant, multi-ply, with elaborate embossing. Those features are the result of sophisticated production and expensive, specialist machinery-not chance.

The key point is this: Charmin toilet paper is produced predominantly in the United States. With this brand, P&G largely relies on domestic manufacturing and runs several major plants, especially in the following states:

  • Ohio
  • Georgia

For consumers in Germany, Charmin currently has little shelf presence. Even so, the brand is still useful as an example: it illustrates how closely comfort, industry and the environment are linked-and how global corporations organise their operations.

Which raw materials go into Charmin

Once you ask where Charmin is made, the next question follows almost immediately: what is it actually made from? The answer leads straight to North American forests.

For Charmin, P&G relies heavily on virgin fibre pulp-wood fibres that have never been recycled. Environmental organisations such as the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) have criticised this for years. Recycled fibres are used only to a limited extent, because the brand’s identity is strongly tied to maximum softness and tear strength.

How the pulp process works

Turning trees into rolls is technically demanding. At the centre is the so-called kraft pulping process, a chemical method used in the pulp industry:

  1. Logs are debarked and chopped into wood chips.
  2. The chips are fed into large digesters and cooked in a chemical solution.
  3. Heat and chemicals dissolve lignin and other components, leaving soft cellulose fibres.
  4. The fibres are washed, bleached and formed into a thin, wet paper web.
  5. Huge drying cylinders and air jets remove water; embossing rollers then create the familiar tissue texture.
  6. The finished paper is wound onto jumbo reels, cut, perforated and converted into household-sized rolls.

Nearly every stage is automated. Computers control speed, moisture, fibre mix and embossing so that the roll comes out of the pack as soft and sturdy as customers expect.

The tension between comfort and climate

Those same quality standards are exactly why Charmin draws attention from climate and forest campaigners. Virgin fibres sourced from boreal forests in Canada and the northern United States are suspected of putting pressure on sensitive ecosystems. Environmental groups warn of biodiversity loss and large-scale logging if corporations lean too heavily on these sources.

P&G, for its part, says its pulp comes only from certified or responsibly assessed sources. The company has set itself the target of sourcing all virgin fibre from verified supply chains and works with certification schemes. Activists argue that this is not enough: they want a much higher share of recycled fibre and alternative inputs such as bamboo or agricultural residues.

New technology in long-established plants

  • lower chemical consumption in the pulping process,
  • separate production waste more effectively and recover it as material.

At the same time, the company is testing alternative fibre blends. Bamboo and certain agricultural residues are seen as promising, but they come with practical obstacles: different fibre lengths, different machine requirements, and a different feel. Consumers who are used to Charmin notice even small shifts in softness or tear resistance-and can be quick to react.

What that means for environmentally conscious buyers

Even if Charmin is barely present in Central Europe, many people face the broader question: how can you tell how “cleanly” your toilet paper is produced? The Charmin example offers a few clues:

  • Brands that are very soft and often multi-ply typically use a high proportion of virgin fibre.
  • They often point to certifications, but say little about the recycled content.
  • North American manufacturers mostly produce locally and export only to a limited extent depending on the market.
  • Environmental labels in Europe more strongly favour recycled fibres or alternative raw materials.

If you want to make your household more climate-friendly, paper products are an obvious place to start: choose recycled toilet paper with credible certifications, use kitchen roll more sparingly, and avoid getting through tissues in large quantities. Over a year, lots of small decisions can add up to noticeable effects.

Why production locations are becoming a selling point

The coronavirus pandemic showed just how fragile supply chains can be for everyday goods. In North America, Charmin was partially sold out during the first months even though the plants kept running. Shortages emerged because demand and logistics were pushed to their limits. Since then, brands have leaned harder on messages about producing “in-country” and supporting jobs.

For P&G, concentrating output in large, highly efficient sites such as Mehoopany offers strategic benefits: short routes to markets, tighter control over quality and supply, and stronger leverage with raw-material suppliers. At the same time, centralisation increases dependence on individual facilities-if a plant goes down, entire regions can be affected.

On the consumer side, interest in transparency is growing in parallel: Where does the wood come from? How much energy is built into a roll? Which chemicals end up in wastewater? That puts brands such as Charmin under greater pressure to publish concrete figures and targets, rather than relying on good-sounding sustainability promises.

In the end, much comes down to a simple question that is easy to forget in everyday life: how much comfort do I really need-and what kind of production am I willing to accept for it? Anyone who digs into that will reach for the next roll with a far more critical eye.
