Condensation on Windows in Winter: The Washing-up Liquid or Glycerin Trick

The heating is on, it’s freezing outside - yet thick droplets are forming on the inside of the glass. It’s irritating, and over time it can damage frames and seals and even affect your health. What many people don’t realise is that you can noticeably reduce condensation using a simple household staple that most of us already have in the cupboard.

Why windows mist up so much in winter

When temperatures drop below 0°C, window panes cool down dramatically. Indoors, warm, moisture-laden air meets cold glass - and at that boundary the familiar effect kicks in: the air can no longer hold the moisture, so water is deposited on the surface. That point is known as the dew point.

What looks like “a bit of mist” in the morning can lead to very real problems:

  • Water collects at the bottom of the pane and runs into the frames.
  • Wood can swell, seals deteriorate more quickly, and mould gets ideal conditions.
  • Rooms can feel close and clammy; many people instinctively turn the heating up.

A lot of households wipe the glass every morning with a towel or kitchen roll. That removes the droplets, but it doesn’t tackle the root cause: the pane remains a perfect surface for condensation, so the same thing happens again the next day.

The surprisingly simple trick: washing-up liquid or glycerin as an invisible protective film

This is a well-known tip in diving and motorcycling: masks and helmet visors are treated with anti-fog products so they don’t mist up. At home, the principle is the same - just far cheaper.

You only need one of two items that are easy to get and often already to hand:

  • glycerin (for example from a pharmacy or a craft supplier)
  • classic washing-up liquid, colourless or lightly coloured

Both change how water behaves on the glass. Technically, it’s about surface tension: moisture can no longer bead up into lots of tiny droplets that create a cloudy layer.

Instead:

  • The moisture spreads out into an even, almost invisible film.
  • The pane stays clear, letting light in properly.
  • Much less condensation forms and runs down to the bottom.

How to apply it step by step

This works best when the prep is right. If you rub washing-up liquid onto dirty glass, you’ll end up with smears rather than a clear view.

Preparation: clean the panes thoroughly

First, clean the windows as you normally would. Whether you use glass cleaner, a vinegar-and-water mix, or methylated spirits, the key point is removing grease, dust, and fingerprints. Then let the panes dry completely.

Applying the anti-fog film

You only need a tiny amount for the protective layer - in this case, less really is more.

  • Lightly dampen a clean microfibre cloth.
  • Put a single drop of washing-up liquid, or a small amount of glycerin, onto the cloth.
  • Rub the inside of the pane all over using circular motions.
  • Use a second, dry cloth to buff the glass until it looks crystal clear.

Important: don’t rinse the surface with water afterwards. The barely visible residue left on the glass is what prevents misting later. If you’ve used too much, you’ll notice streaks or a slightly greasy feel - in that case, buff more firmly with a dry cloth.

How long does it last - and how safe is it?

How often you need to reapply depends largely on the humidity in the room. In drier bedrooms, treating the windows every few days is usually enough. In bathrooms and kitchens, where a lot of steam is produced, a weekly refresh can be sensible.

For most modern window frames, this method is harmless as long as you apply it sparingly and don’t flood the seals. If you have very delicate finishes, test it first on a small, inconspicuous area.

More ways to reduce condensation on windows

The washing-up-liquid or glycerin film works directly on the pane. The overall effect improves if you also follow a few basic rules to keep indoor humidity under control:

  • Rapid ventilation rather than leaving windows on the latch: Air the home two or three times a day for 5–10 minutes, ideally creating a through-draught with windows on opposite sides.
  • Don’t turn the heating off completely: Cold rooms encourage moisture to settle on windows and walls.
  • Avoid drying laundry constantly in living areas: Either ventilate very well or use a separate, well-ventilated room.
  • Use the extractor when cooking: Pasta, soups, and frying can release large amounts of water vapour.
  • Ventilate after showering: Keep the door shut and open the window wide - only close it again once the mirror has stopped steaming up.

Combining these habits with the anti-fog trick reduces not only window condensation, but also the risk of mould on cool external walls.

When technical solutions start to make sense

In some homes, the washing-up-liquid or glycerin approach won’t be enough on its own. Typical warning signs include:

  • permanently wet window sills
  • black spots on silicone seals and in corners
  • a musty smell despite regular ventilation

In these cases, an electric dehumidifier can help bring moisture levels down. Retrofitting ventilation systems or replacing very old single glazing can also make a noticeable long-term difference - both to comfort and to heating bills.

Why washing-up liquid and glycerin work so well

A common question is why you don’t need an expensive specialist spray. The answer is in how they work. Washing-up liquid contains surfactants: molecules that cling to the glass surface and change the way water sits on it. Glycerin behaves similarly, but tends to adhere a bit more strongly.

That creates a kind of invisible protective film. Moisture no longer forms countless tiny droplets; instead it spreads more evenly and more transparently. It’s the same effect used for swimming goggles and helmet visors - just with dedicated products more often used there.

Practical everyday tips

Once people have had good results with this method, they often use it elsewhere too:

  • Bathroom mirrors: a trace of washing-up liquid can stop the mirror from fogging completely after every shower.
  • Inside car windows: especially helpful in older vehicles to reduce persistent misting (always make sure visibility stays clear!).
  • Glass lamp covers in damp rooms: less condensation, fewer water marks.

As with any household remedy, test a small area first and don’t overdo it. One drop is enough - the result comes from an even application and careful polishing, not from using more product.
