A straightforward trick can keep window panes clear for noticeably longer. It costs only a few pounds, works without harsh chemicals, and takes just a few minutes. The key is a colourless liquid additive that leaves an invisible protective layer on the glass.

Why windows get dirty so quickly in winter

Autumn and winter are the toughest seasons for window glass. Damp air, heating fumes, road grime and leftover pollen settle onto panes like a thin film. Add raindrops that carry dirt with them, and once they dry they often leave unattractive marks behind.

  • Fine dust clings especially well to those damp patches.
  • Wind and rain bring outside dirt straight onto the windows.

For storage, a cool, dry cupboard is enough. Keep the bottle tightly closed so contaminants cannot get in. Glycerin is viscous; if a little drips, small drops are easy to lift with kitchen roll.

A clear note for families with children: even though glycerin is used as an additive in many foods, the cleaning additive does not belong in children’s hands or in the mouth. Store the bottle out of reach, as you would with other cleaning products.

Once you have glycerin at home, it is not only useful for windows. Many people use it to keep rubber seals on fridge doors supple, or to maintain dry window seals. A light wipe on a cloth is enough; avoid leaving any puddles of liquid.
